Point Load Index Tester

Point Load Index Tester is used to measure the strength value of rock samples quickly, efficiently both in the field and in the laboratory. It works by applying a concentrated load on a cylindrical or irregularly shaped rock specimen until it fractures. The test provides anisotropy index (Ia 50) and strength index values at a point (Is 50), which can be used to determine uniaxial compressive strength (UCS).
Sample dimensions are measured during the test and the test apparatus includes sample load and force gauges. A piston that supports the lower conical platen is moved by pressure from the pump. The pressure is immediately read from the digital pressure gauge. The upper platen is fastened to the crosshead and a fixed graduated scale is used to measure the sample diameter.
